Ingredients

For the Cookies

  • 1 cup unsalted butter 225g, browned
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour 292g, spooned and leveled
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup dark brown sugar packed, 200g
  • 1/4 cup pure maple syrup 60mL
  • 1 large egg at room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

For the Salted Maple Icing

  • 3/4 cup powdered sugar 100g
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 3 tablespoons pure maple syrup
  • sea salt flakes optional – for topping

Instructions

Prepare the Brown Butter

  • Add the butter to a medium saucepan or skillet. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly until it melts, sizzles, simmers, and turns brown, about 5 minutes. Pour into a large mixing bowl, scraping in all the golden bits.

Cool the Butter

  • Set the browned butter aside to cool to room temperature, about 20 minutes.

Mix the Dry Ingredients

  • In a separate mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, ground cinnamon, and salt. Set aside.

Combine Ingredients

  • Once the brown butter has cooled, add dark brown sugar and whisk until well combined. Then add pure maple syrup, egg, and vanilla extract, whisking until smooth.

Combine Wet and Dry Mixtures

  • Gently fold the dry flour mixture into the wet ingredients until you have a smooth cookie dough. Let the dough sit at room temperature for 10 minutes if it feels too soft.

Shape and Bake

  • Use a large cookie scoop to portion out 4 to 5 balls of cookie dough onto a parchment-lined baking sheet, leaving about 3 inches of space between each cookie.
  • Bake in a preheated oven for 10 to 12 minutes until golden brown around the edges but the center is slightly underbaked.

Cool the Cookies

  • Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for about 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. Repeat with the remaining dough.

Make the Salted Maple Icing

  • In a bowl or measuring cup, combine powdered sugar, a pinch of salt, and pure maple syrup. Whisk until smooth and pourable.

Drizzle the Icing

  • Once the cookies are cool, drizzle the salted maple icing over them and sprinkle sea salt flakes if desired. Enjoy!

Notes

For additional flavor, consider adding chocolate chips, nuts, or dried fruit. Store cookies in an airtight container to keep them fresh for up to a week at room temperature or two weeks in the refrigerator. Avoid over-browning the butter for best results.
